How to Join an Internet Forum!
Internet forums are a great way to chat with other woodworkers. British Woodworking doesn’t have one, and the most popular in Britain are UKWorkshop.co.uk and Carpenter Talk on the Screwfix site. Both have active memberships with a continual flow of topics ranging from the technical to the philosophical.

1 Where to go
Our article (Aug-Sept07) mentions a fair number of forums. We will continue to feature them in future issues. To access UKWorkshop, you go to www.ukworkshop.co.uk. Once there you click on the Forums button on the far right-hand side of the bar along the top.

2 Have a look
You don’t need to register to have a look at a forum. You can scroll through the topics and see what people are asking and saying. You might want to start by going to a special section that interests you, though most of the action tends to happen in one of the more general parts. You click on the topic and can then read what’s been said. Normally the posts are ordered with the oldest first (ie the question or comment that started the topic), but you can usually change the view with an option lower down the page that allows you to change the order. You can make various changes, and move between sections, but you can’t post a New Topic, nor Post a Reply without first being registered.

3 Registering for a forum
Normally this is pretty simple, as explained in the article in the Aug-Sept issue. At first it’s best to leave all the options in your profile as they stand. This is normally the safest approach. Later, once you know what you are doing, you can adjust your Profile to suit your needs when it comes to be alerted to replies to your posts, whether you want your email address shown and other points. To register you only need an email address, and come up with a password you can remember. But take note: the forum will probably send you an authentication email. This is sometimes sent to your junk mailbox by your internet/email provider thinking the message is spam. So check your junk mailbox immediately or it might delete the email after a day or so.

4 Posting a topic
Go to the suitable forum, like Carpenter Talk at Screwfix.com, and find the New Topic button. It will be somewhere, just needs a bit of searching sometimes. Fill in the subject line (like an email) and then write your question. If you have written a signature in your Profile it will be automatically added to your post, but don’t worry that you don’t see the signature when you compose the message. You can usually look at a preview of your message by pressing a button at the bottom of the screen. Then watch your topic develop. Don’t be surprised if the subject wanders off in tangental directions. If you have selected to watch a topic (which may be the default in your profile) you will receive an email notification when a reply has been added.

5 Posting a reply
To reply to a post there is usually a reply button at the bottom of the screen. Or you can click the Quote button beside each message. This brings up a window with the post you want to comment about. You can now edit the original post so that only the bit you want to comment about will be seen. Do a preview to see how it works. You add your comments after the quote, which should ultimately be shown in a colour. Quoting is a good way to remind other people what you are commenting about, especially when a topic gets long and complicated.http://www.ukworkshop.co.ukshapeimage_5_link_0
